about

1 Scartunas Oscar Aleman
A crazy hot tune written by this Argentinian guitar maestro. If you love Django but haven’t discovered Oscar you have a delight in store. Follow his life story, truly amazing.

2 I’ll See You In My Dreams Jones / Kahn
One of the great standards written in 1924, recorded by just about every jazz ‘name’ but most movingly perhaps performed by Joe Brown with solo ukulele as the finale to the concert in remembrance of George Harrison.

3 La Vie En Rose Piaf/Guglielmi
‘The Little Sparrow of Belleville’ wrote this for us in 1946…she was a big fan of ours.

4 Avalon Al Jolson? Puccini?
The opening melody ‘resembles’ Puccini's aria ‘E Lucevan le Stelle’ from ‘ Tosca’, in fact so much so that in 1921 Puccini's publishers were awarded $25,000 and all subsequent royalties of the song!

5 Black and Blue Waller/Brooks/Razaf
Written in 1929 for the musical ‘Connie’s Hot Chocolates’. The original lyrics are not so simple ‘black vs white’ as heard in the best known versions of the song by Louis Armstrong.

6 Troublant Bolero Django Reinhardt
Written in 1947, it doesn’t take much to imagine yourself in a basement bar in the back streets of Pigalle with pastis in hand. That’s ‘pastis’…not ‘pasties’.

7 Three Little Words Harry Ruby / Bert Kalmar
From 1930 and recorded by just about everybody from Ethel Waters to Sarah Vaughan via Stan Getz and John Coltrane!

8 La Gitane Tchan Tchou Vidal
One of the most technically difficult of waltzes to play, written by Paul ‘Tchan Tchou’ Vidal, a contemporary of Django and a ‘Gitane’ from the Spanish line of gypsies.

9 Stardust Hoagy Carmichael
One of the most recorded songs of all time. Probably his greatest? Oh, but then maybe ‘Georgia’? ‘The Nearness of You’? ‘Heart and Soul’? ‘Rockin Chair’? ‘Two Sleepy People’ ? etc etc etc

10 Place Du Tertre Bireli Lagrene
Perhaps the finest of the ‘new’ gypsy guitarists, and a musical phenomenon. Gypsy, funk, bebop, fusion, he’s played with everyone in the jazz scene. Here’s a musical portrait of the famous vibrant square in Montmartre.

11 La Bikina Ruben Fuentes
A Mexican pop song which was a massive hit in the Spanish-speaking world. The lyrics tell of a sad girl in a bikini walking alone along the beach, lost in reverie over a lost love.

12 Stompin’ At Decca Reinhardt / Grapelli
Django, Stephane and the boys had a little time left over, recording at Decca studios in 1938 so they improvised this at the last minute! It became one of the Hot Club’s biggest hits.
